MPS IV is an inherited disease. The direct cause is the excess deposition and accumulation of mucopolysaccharides in the body.
Morquio syndrome also known as mucopolysaccharoidosis IV or Morquio's is an autosomal recessive mucopolysaccharide disease. It is an inherited disease in which the body is missing a substance that is necessary for breaking down long chains of molecules called glycosaminoglycans or mucopolysaccharides. There is no specific treatment for MPS IV, only symptoms are treated.
The disease is inherited if both parents pass the defective gene, if only one parent has the defective gene then the disease would not be inherited.
MPS IV A occures in 1 of every 200,000 births.
A person with MPS IV A will have these symptoms: Coarse facial features, knock-knees, widely spaced teeth, large head or macrocephaly, hypermobile joints and others.
